Keurig K40 Review

In this Keurig K40 review, we’re going to look at one of the middle-of-the-road coffee makers produced by the Keurig brand. It’s most certainly not the cheapest, but it’s around two-thirds the cost of the priciest Keurig machines available, and it comes with some sample drinks pods to kick you off.

Having a coffee machine in your home might seem like an unnecessary expense, but when you total the cost of routine trips to the local café or coffee shop, you can soon recoup the costs and then even save money by switching out store-bought cups of coffee for a machine that does all the brewing for you. This machine is perfect for larger families and groups of friends, with its generous water reservoir.

Keurig K40 Overview

Also called ‘The Elite Brewing System’ by the manufacturer, the Keurig K40 is one of a wide array of varying size and cost Keurig machines, coming in around the mid-range in terms of price and stature.

It's larger than the compact K-Mini K15 model for example, with more moving parts; however, it's less advanced than some of its bigger brothers, such as the K55 and K475.

Unlike the smallest models in the range that have a built-in, single-cup reservoir, the K40 has a large, removable water reservoir.

It can also brew more than one size coffee. Unlike the K15, for example, this machine has been a part of the Keurig family for far longer, first being available online in early 2007. Despite its long life on the shelves, the general customer feedback is overwhelmingly positive.

Also unlike some smaller models, this machine can double up and provide both pod-based hot drinks, as well as using ground coffee, though it cannot grind its own beans.

Who is the Keurig K40 for?

The Keurig K40 is ideally suited to small groups of people, be that a family home or a small business office.

Whether you’re making coffees for the whole family, or doing the morning coffee run for the whole team, you’ll appreciate having the large water reservoir that won’t need to be continuously refilled for each cup that you’re making. It’s also ideal for the person who uses a taller-than-average coffee mug for the car.

However, it’s less suited to somebody that wants a bare-bones coffee maker with no frills, as the price tag is reasonably high compared to smaller Keurig models. It’s also no good for anyone who wants to brew a whole pot of coffee and go back for seconds, without needing to run the machine again.

What’s Included with the Keurig K40?

As you’d expect, you don’t have to pay extra to get all the basic accessories; the bundle includes the removable reservoir and removable drip tray, as well as the necessary cord to power the machine.

You really won’t need anything else for the basic operation of the machine. However, you won’t get any descaling solution, but it’s a relatively inexpensive accessory to purchase separately from the coffee maker.

Unlike cheaper options, you'll also get some K-Cup pods bundled in with the machine so that you can try out a number of different hot beverages immediately after setting the machine up.

The type of pods included within the bundle are part of the 'K-Cup Variety Pack', which provides a selection of the drinks available through the branded coffee pods. However, you can also use other brand name coffees, which open up a range of possibilities, including Starbucks drinks and other mainstream names in coffee.

If you want a more detailed look at the machine, then you can check out this great unboxing video on YouTube for the K40 coffee maker, which should give you a fuller idea of what’s in the box.

Keurig K40 Features

Keurig K40 Elite Brewing System

Whereas some coffee makers can overcomplicate the process of brewing a quick cup of coffee, the K40 keeps things simple.

Once you've supplied power to the machine, you only need to press a single button to brew a cup.

There are multiple coffee cup sizes to choose from, represented by a small, medium and large cup icon on the machine, so you can tailor your drink to the amount of caffeine you need.

Removable reservoir

The Keurig K40 gets its water supply from a 48-ounce water reservoir, which can be detached from the coffee maker when refilling, or for more compact storage. With space for up to 6 cups of coffee worth of water, you can supply the whole family with coffee before needing to refill.

Being removable, it’s easy to clean and descale separately to the coffee maker itself, which can be done with official descaling solution or household products such as white vinegar. What’s more, the reservoir is visible from the front of the machine, so it’s always obvious when more water needs to be added.

Automatic shutdown

With a single button press, you can control the K40’s ‘Auto Off’ feature; this is a useful piece of functionality seen on the majority of coffee makers belonging to the Keurig family. Controlled via a small button on the top-mounted control panel, the function automatically shuts down the coffee maker after 2 hours, saving on household energy and putting the machine to sleep until it's next needed. However, it can be turned off to keep the machine in a permanently ready state for the caffeine-lovers among you.

Compatible with non-brand coffee

The K40 machine can produce more than just coffee; additional hot beverages like tea and hot chocolate are also supported, and pods can be found in the Keurig range for those, too. That said, it's also possible to use off-brand coffee pods within this machine in addition to the branded K-Cups. This isn’t something that can be said for all coffee makers, so it’s a great bonus if you’re looking to use up an old supply or find a good deal on pods that aren’t in the K-Cup range.

Removable drip tray

The drip tray, provided with the product by default, can hold more than a cup’s worth of runoff, so if you accidentally forget to leave a mug beneath the coffee dispenser, you won’t end up with spillage all over your countertop. However, the best part about the tray is that it can be removed.

You should have enough space for most mug sizes, but some of the larger travel cups may struggle to fit beneath the dispenser spout with the drip tray in place. Thus, this feature is useful for those who like to take their morning coffee with them.

How to use the Keurig K40

Once you've unpacked and set up the Keurig K40, it's straightforward to start brewing your favorite hot drinks. Start by adding water to the removable water reservoir, up to a maximum of 48 oz.

If you don't like the thought of leaving standing water, or won't be brewing often, then you should ideally measure out what's needed with your mugs. Generally speaking, 48 oz. is enough for around 10 cups of coffee.

Select the coffee pod for the drink of your choice, and then place it into the pod housing after lifting the handle on top of the machine. Lower the handle and secure it in place until it clicks. Next, place your mug beneath the dispenser. Depending on the size of drink you want to brew, and whether you’re using a tall mug or travel cup, you can remove the drip tray to make more space.

When your mug is in place and the handle depressed, you'll note some blinking LED lights on top of the coffee maker. One of these represents the 'Heating' function, and if this is flashing red, then the water isn't yet heated sufficiently.

Otherwise, once the water is prepared, choose the size of coffee that you're after and hit the button to brew it, which should take around a minute. At this point, you can lift the handle back up and dispose of the spent coffee pod.

Alternatives

Depending on what you’re looking for, the Keurig K40 is of a reasonable size and won’t take up a great deal of space on your office desk or kitchen countertop; however, there are smaller options available.

For example, whereas this coffee maker measures in at 12.2 x 14.9 x 14.2 in, the K-Mini K15 has dimensions of 11.1” H 7.5” W x 10.5”.

This is in part due to the lack of detachable water reservoir on the K15, as well as the smaller mug housing area.

These differences make the K15 an ideal alternative if spatial requirements are one of your biggest factors in choosing a coffee maker

Moving on, we’ll consider the look and feel of your chosen coffee machine.

Regardless of the brand you choose, when you look at coffee makers from the lower end of the budget range, you’re going to get a model that uses basic buttons and LEDs to indicate things like your brewing status and water levels.

Such a basic design might seem out of place in a home that has begun to adopt smart home devices and other modern appliances.

So, it’s worth considering a machine like the Keurig 475. It features a large full-color touch screen, which has a digital clock display, a timed 'On/Off' setting, and other functions to be controlled with taps and swipes.

Next, we’ll look at the Keurig K575. Coffee makers that use coffee pods to serve individual cups of coffee are convenient, but they do sacrifice on the level of control that you have over the size, strength and flavor of your cup of joe.

If we look towards the other end of the price spectrum, there's the Keurig K575 Coffee Maker, which can craft coffees up to 12oz in size.

Click here to view in Amazon

It boasts all the same features as the K40, including an Auto Off function and varying cup sizes, but can also vary coffee strength and pump hot water on demand, so that you can fine-tune the flavor of your hot drink with ease. Though it’s still a pod-to-cup machine, this gives you broader control over the finished product.

Hamilton Beach (49980A) Single Serve Coffee Maker and Coffee Pot Maker, Programmable, Stainless Steel

Finally, it's worth looking at an alternative from a different class of coffee maker.

The Hamilton Beach 49980A is an interesting beast, being capable of brewing from single-serve disc-shaped soft pods, whilst also being able to brew pots of coffee from loose grounds.

So, if you’re the kind of person that likes to try new ground coffee flavors from time to time, but don’t want to lose the ability to make coffee from single pods, then this machine could be an ideal alternative.

Coffee's popularity has exploded in recent years, and there are now more coffee shops around the world than ever before. That said, forking out for a shop-bought cup of coffee each day can get pricey, and sometimes you just don’t want to step out of the house.

For days when you need that caffeine fix but don’t want to venture out or hand over some of your hard-earned cash, you could benefit from having a coffee machine in the comfort of your home. Here, we’ll look at the Keurig k15 review, which is a low-budget machine capable of making single-serve coffees from a pod.

Keurig K15 Overview

Keurig K15 Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 to 10 oz. Brew Sizes, Black

The Keurig K15 is a compact and highly portable coffee machine that uses the modern and popular pod-based design to produce single-serve cups of coffee within a few minutes.

As a member of the Keurig family, this coffee maker can use a vast array of 500 different brands and varieties of coffee pods, being compatible with all 'K-Cup' pods.

These pods are manufactured by the same company responsible for creating the Keurig range, so you needn’t have any concerns around compatibility problems.

If kitchen space is limited, then the K15 could be an ideal choice; it’ll tuck neatly into a corner, without domineering too much of your countertop real estate.

What’s more, at dimensions of just 6.9 x 10.7 x 10.8, you have a machine that can conveniently be taken into the office, or placed there as a permanent fixture, without taking up too much desk space. The product itself is a relatively new entry onto the coffee maker scene, having been available through mainstream websites like Amazon since late-2017.

The K15 single-handedly widens the options available to anyone wanting to buy a Keurig machine, as other machines in the range are mostly similar in size, whereas the K15 is vastly more compact. It’s thanks to advances in technology and the popularity of pod-based coffee makers that this machine manages to have such a low price tag.

Who is the Keurig K15 for?

This machine probably isn’t the best choice for the on-the-go coffee drinker who likes to take a travel mug on every journey.

Source

The limited dispenser space means that some larger travel-sized mugs can’t fit under the spout, so filling up a flask for a long journey isn’t going to be easy. As a result, this machine is more suited to people looking to make a single early morning caffeine hit to go with breakfast.

Larger families with numerous coffee lovers or those who like to entertain large groups might also want to look for a machine that incorporates a water reservoir, as the machine’s single-cup capacity requires water to be loaded on an as-required basis. However, this does make the K-15 perfect for single tenants or homeowners, as the absence of a water container means that limescale is less likely to build up within the machine as quickly as it would in a machine that has a reservoir full of standing water.

What's Included with the Keurig K15?

The Keurig K15 mostly comes with the basics you'd expect to get started. For example, you'll get the unit itself, a power cord and the built-in water reservoir. You'll also get a user manual, which is handy for understanding how functions such as the descaling process work. However, where this machine is lacking is in the provision of coffee pods.

There are no Keurig pods included as part of the package, nor do you get any descaling solution, though as we'll explain below, there are some household hacks that can save you money on not purchasing this solution yourself. Still, you'll need to stock up on coffee pods in advance if you expect to use this machine the same day that it arrives.

Keurig K15 Features

So, we’ve covered the kind of person or people who would benefit most from this product, but now we’ll look more in depth at the range of features and other characteristics that make up this coffee machine.

If you’re looking for something that’s sleek and stylish, but that won’t take up a great deal of space, then this could be the machine for you.

Despite the comparatively low price tag and small stature, the machine still has access to a vast range of hot drinks.

Keurig K15 Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 to 10 oz. Brew Sizes, Black

The only area in which the machine is lacking, and in which other machines may triumph, is in any additional features or functionality that go beyond the basic brew-making abilities.

Coffee pod variety

The K15 is compatible with any coffee pod from the Keurig coffee range, which doesn’t limit the range of drinks types or flavors available by any means. In total, the machine can support over 500 distinct brands and varieties of coffee pods produced by the Keurig company. These options include classic favorites, like Green Mountain Coffee, Lipton and Starbucks, as well as tea and hot chocolate drinks for the kids or sweet tooth in your life.

Compact and portable

The size of this machine makes it well-suited to office environments and other locations, not just within the home. A lack of moving parts such as the built-in single-cup reservoir also means that there are few detachable accessories, which keeps the machine both lightweight and compact.

It’ll only command a very small footprint no matter where it’s set up. What’s more, there’s a cord storage feature that keeps the power cable hidden away and unobtrusive, so that you won't have wires running all over the place.

Straightforward maintenance

Certain features of the K15 make it easy to clean up in the event of spills or accidents. The included drip tray is capable of holding a full brew using a Keurig coffee pod, in case you forget to place a mug beneath the dispenser before kicking off the process and walking away from the machine.

The inclusion of a single-cup reservoir also means that you won’t need to empty out excess, unused water into the sink once you’re finished. The descaling process is also super simple and requires no additional cleaning pods or other accessories that are sold separately.

Instead, you’ll simply need a descaling solution. In the absence of this, or if you’re looking to save money, you could even process vinegar through the machine as a cheap alternative to genuine descaling chemicals. Just be sure to run water through the machine several times afterwards, to avoid having the flavor of your coffee tainted.

Energy efficiency

There's no denying that the Keurig K15 is at the cheaper end of the budget range when it comes to home coffee machines. For many cheaper models, you might expect more limited functionality, though the K15 actually features an automatic-shutoff function.

When you've added a single cup of water and your cup of coffee has been brewed, this machine will automatically turn itself off after 90 seconds, which helps to preserve your home energy bills.

How to use the Keurig K15

Keurig K15 Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 to 10 oz. Brew Sizes, Black

When you get the Keurig K15, there's some first-time setup required before you start brewing your first cup of coffee.

Dispose of all packaging and packing tape from the brewer and plug the device into a grounded socket, then power on the device for the first time.

You'll note an LED flashing blue, which indicates a need to add water. Next, add a single 8 oz. cup of water into the water reservoir.

Lift the handle on top of the device, which is the compartment in which you'd normally insert a pod. At this point, water will be fed from the reservoir into the brewer, and you can close the handle once this process has completed. You will not be drinking this water, so don’t worry about coffee pods at this point.

Finally, once the 'BREW' button has begun flashing blue, press the button to begin the process. After a couple of minutes, the water will be dispensed, so be sure to have a cup on the drip tray. Dispose of the dispensed contents, and your machine is ready to use.

The process of making a cup of coffee is as simple as repeating the above process, but adding a coffee pod when the handle is elevated. Take a look at this video, which highlights the sleek design of the K15, as well as some of the features that we’ve covered above, and how to brew your first cup.

It's worth bearing in mind the routine maintenance that you'll need to carry out from time to time, as the build-up of calcium deposits and limescale can affect your coffee maker's performance.

This is a something that you should do for every coffee machine, regardless of make or model, and even with other kitchen appliances, such as kettles. Generally speaking, you should descale the system every 3 to 6 months.

Descaling the K15 is straightforward and requires no supplementary equipment, other than a descaling solution; Keurig manufacture and sell their own, but in reality, you can use a similar store-bought product.

Simply add around 4-5 oz. of descaling solution to the water reservoir with around three-quarters of a cup of fresh water, and then place a large ceramic cup beneath the dispenser on the drip tray.

Follow the normal process for making a cup of coffee, but add no coffee pods, and discard the liquid into the sink. Repeat the process twice over to ensure that the chemicals have fully cleared the system.

Alternatives

To address one of the main disadvantages of the K15 Coffee Maker, we can look at one of its close siblings, the K55 Coffee Maker, which is also manufactured by Keurig.

The K-Mini K15 does not feature a water reservoir; this means that you must refill the device with fresh water for each cup of coffee that you’d like to brew.

On the other hand, the K55 features a removable 48oz water tank, meaning you can pump out more than one cup of joe at once.

Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 To 10 Oz. Brew Sizes, Black

For couples or families that love coffee, the K15 might become a tad too tedious in this respect. The Keurig K-Select coffee maker is another strong alternative to the K15 unit. Though much of the functionality is similar, the key difference in the K-Select machine is that it features a taller space for mugs beneath the coffee dispenser area, meaning that larger cups can fit into the machine without having to remove the drip tray.

Keurig K-Classic Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, 6 To 10 Oz. Brew Sizes, Black

To clarify, the K15 coffee maker can only support cups of around 6-8oz in size, unless the drip tray is first removed.

That said, perhaps you're more interested in a family-friendly coffee maker that produces entire batches of brew for large groups, as opposed to single-serve pods. In this case, a strong alternative is the Aicok Coffee Maker.

It's a lesser-known, foreign-made brand, but in spite of this the machine has overwhelmingly positive reception from users, and it's very inexpensive when compared to bigger brand names like Cuisinart, for example.

Conclusion

Constantly buying coffees on the go can quickly get expensive; if you spend 5 bucks on a coffee every weekday morning for a year, you’d have spent around $1,300. Alternatively, for a fraction of the price, you could pick up the K15 coffee machine for the price of around 2 weeks’ worth of Starbucks.

It doesn’t have the same kind of functionality as some of the more expensive, larger or bean-to-cup machines, though it’s all you’ll need to produce a range of over 500 drinks in the morning, quickly and cheaply.

There are many coffee machines available as part of the Keurig range, and the K15 is the smallest of the bunch. However, if simplicity and cost are your two driving factors, and you’re not interested in having all the bells and whistles of a bigger, pricier machine, then this Keurig unit is an ideal choice.

Because the K450 is already on the market, many people never even heard about the K425, and it is definitely worth a mention. It has loads of features that will help you brew the perfect cup or carafe of coffee every time, and it may just be a bit less costly than the K450, but with pretty much the same features, with a couple of minor exceptions.

The Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus has an easy programming button, and it is easy to make a cup or carafe of coffee in just a couple of minutes. This brewer is compatible with a variety of brew sizes, so you can brew a small cup or a large go cup quickly and easily.

This brewer has a 70-ounce (over 8 cups) water reservoir, so you can always brew plenty when you need it, and if you need more, you can do it quickly. You can even brew tea, and make delicious hot chocolate. The programmable features are super easy to use. The touch screen panel is easy to use, and large so you can see what you are doing. Some of the best features include the strength button, the temperature selection button, and the quantity button.

There are also other features that make this an intuitive brewer that knows what you want every time. The customizable user interface wallpaper feature lets you choose from nine brew sizes, ranging from four ounces to 30 ounces.

Keurig Hot 2.0 K425 Plus Series Single-serve Coffee Maker

The body of the machine is made of lightweight plastic, and is an attractive black and silver color. It is also available in red and white.

Who is the Keurig 2.0 K425  for?

If you have no need to brew any more than a single cup
of coffee at any given time, this probably isn’t going
to be the best brewer choice for you.

But, if you do have times when you would like to brew a full pot, and you want to do it in a hurry, the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus may be just what you need. This brewer has a sleek, modern appearance, with a color touch screen panel that is large and highly visible.

It will look great in any kitchen, and even though it is large, it doesn’t actually take up too much space. It will fit on most counters, and would be ideal for college students living in dorm rooms. Basically, this is a coffee maker for anyone who loves a really good cup of coffee, and who enjoys experimenting with different flavors and varieties.

You can get more than 125 different beverage pods from Keurig, and even though the machine is designed to create the perfect cup of coffee, you can customize your brew to create your perfect cup (or carafe) of coffee. It is built to last, and is very durable, and comes with a one-year warranty.

What's Included with the Keurig 2.0 K425  for?

The Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus often comes with everything you need to start brewing coffee as soon as you take the machine out of the box and set it up. Depending on the seller, you can find the bare-bones model with no accessories, or for just a few dollars more, you can get a brewer that comes with a variety of accessories, including a small selection of Keurig K-Cup and K-Carafe pods (coffee, hot chocolate, and chai), a reusable K-Cup for brewing your own coffee, and more.

The instruction manual is also included, and it is a good idea to give it a once over to familiarize yourself with the machine. There are some features that aren’t found on previous models that are not part of the 2.0 series, so you may want to learn more about them.

But, this machine is so easy to use that you can be brewing awesome coffee almost as soon as you take it out of the box. If you need a visual aid, check out this YouTube video that shows the unboxing and setup of the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus.

Keurig Hot 2.0 K425 Plus Series Single-serve Coffee Maker

source

Do you love to have a few cups of coffee every day? Is it starting to cost you a fortune buying coffee from Starbucks and other chains throughout the day?

You can make the same delicious coffees at home for a fraction of the price when you are using a Keurig machine, including the K425.

This durable coffee maker can brew more than 125 types of Keurig pods, including some of your favorites from Starbucks and other popular manufacturers, and you will be spending a lot less money every day. After a few short months, your brewer will have paid for itself. Some of our favorite features of the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus include:

Strength Setting

The strength setting which is common to all of the 2.0 series from Keurig allows you to create a cup of coffee that is the ideal strength for your tastes. The machine will automatically brew the coffee after reading the label, but you can make your own adjustments and customize your perfect cup of coffee. There are three strength settings: mild, medium, and strong.

Easy to Clean

This brewer is extremely easy to clean and look after. In fact, there is very little maintenance involved, with the exception of cleaning and descaling the parts once in a while. Because it works with the K-Cup and K-Carafe pods, there is very little mess to clean up in the first place, which keeps maintenance to a minimum. Of course, if you have hard water, you should get into the habit of cleaning and descaling once every month or so.

Fast Brewing

The manufacturer claims that you can brew coffee in less than a minute with the Keurig 2.0 K425. It is even supposed to brew a full carafe in the same short time. This may be a bit far-reaching, but this machine does work pretty quickly. Most users report that they are able to brew a cup or a carafe of coffee in less than two minutes, which is pretty fast. If you need a caffeine fix in a hurry, you won’t be disappointed.

Easy to Use

We love that this brewer is so easy to use. You can brew a single cup (in a variety of sizes), or a full carafe. The reservoir holds 70 ounces of water, so you can brew a lot of coffee before you need to refill it. The touch screen is simple to operate, and you basically only have to press a couple of buttons, wait a couple of minutes, and enjoy great tasting coffee. The features are programmable, and the machine will do most of the work for you.

Large Panel

This brewer has a large touch screen panel on the front that lets you easily select the various functions and features. There is also a customizable user interface wallpaper feature. You can do everything through the touch screen panel, which is not obtrusive, and it actually adds to the overall design of the machine. This is a compact machine that can fit anywhere, and it will look great with any type of décor.

Durability

This is a durable coffee maker that is built to last. One may think that because it is plastic that it would break easily, but this has never been a problem with any of the Keurig brewers. It is so durable that it comes with a one-year warranty, so you are protected if there are any manufacturer defects. Expect a hassle-free customer service experience if you do have any issues or questions about the product.

Water Reservoir

The 70-ounce water reservoir will let you produce a total of eight cups of coffee, depending on the size of your cups. You can adjust the settings as necessary in order to get the amount you need for the cup you are using, or if you are brewing a carafe. The water reservoir also lights up, so if you want to make a cup of coffee in the middle of the night, you won’t have to turn on any lights to see what you are doing.

There are a few things that we don’t like about the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus brewer. For starters, you can only use pods that have the Keurig logo. Other pods will not be recognized by the machine, with the exception of the reusable pod that is for brewing your own coffee blends.

Another problem is that even though most grocers do carry the coffee pods, it can be difficult to find the specialty pods, such as teas, lattes, and hot chocolate.

We also don’t like the fact that these machines tend to be a bit on the noisy side. Unfortunately, this is not isolated to a few incidents. A quick Google search will tell you that the noise is a common problem.

One other issue we have is that you can’t brew a second cup of coffee immediately after the first. The brewer needs to go through the pre-heating process all over again.

Keurig Hot 2.0 K425 Plus Series Single-serve Coffee Maker

Cleaning the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus

The process for cleaning the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus is pretty much the same as it is for all of the brewers in the 2.0 series.

To clean your Keurig 2.0 machine, simply follow these steps:

1

Wipe down unit with a soft, damp cloth

2

Remove drip tray, wash by hand with warm, soapy water
(this is not dishwasher safe)

3

Remove water reservoir and lid, clean with soft, damp cloth
do not dry as this can leave lint in the reservoir)

4

Perform a brew cycle with water only to clean the needle and basket.

5

Wash the carafe after each use.

6

Descale the brewer once every month or two to remove mineral deposits

Alternative Product

If you are looking for other options to consider before making your purchase, you may want to take a look at the Keurig 2.0 K475, which is designed so it holds the same amount of water as its predecessor, but doesn’t take up as much counter space.

This model has a digital clock that isn’t available on other Keurig brewers, and it has separate settings for specialty drinks, including chai, cocoa, mocha, and more.

Keurig K475 Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, Programmable Brewer, Black

source

This is an attractive unit that is available in a variety of colors, including black and silver, sandy pearl, and vintage red.  It is just as easy to use as other Keurig models, and it is one of the more popular models in the 2.0 series.

Conclusion

You don’t have to go out and spend $10 or more every day on a couple of cups of coffee when you can make your own, quickly and easily, with the Keurig 2.0 K425 Plus brewer. This coffee maker lets you brew a single cup in a variety of sizes, or a full carafe if you want to serve a group of people, or just have extra coffee ready when you need it. Customize your brew strength, brew specialty drinks, and more. It’s cheaper, and faster, than going to your local coffee shop.

K40 Vs K45

When it comes to choosing your first single-serve coffee machine, things can become a little bit difficult; there might be a few little bumps in the road that you could hit along the way. You could be unfamiliar with the components that you should be looking for or you might have something particular in mind that you just don’t seem to be able to find (check out Keurig K40 vs K45 in detail).

If you are at all familiar with kitchen appliances, then you might recognize the name Keurig Green Mountain. They have been making single-serve coffee appliances for more than three decades and they are recognized for their craftsmanship and quality.

Most of their products are designed with users in mind, which could account for the fact that their coffee machines can be found in more than twenty million homes across North America alone.

Do you like to drink coffee in the morning?

Or do you prefer drinking something else? Regardless of what your answers to these questions are, we know that you will like to have your own control over how your drink comes out. A lot of the different models that can be found under the Keurig 2.0 product line can actually be used in a way that enables you to choose the temperature that you would like your brew to be and the strength of whatever it is that you are drinking.

Most of their unique, single-serve appliances can also be used with their 2.0 Licensed K-Cups. These are pretty wonderful because they come in a lot of different forms. You can use them to make hot and cold coffee, different types of tea, different varieties of hot chocolate, beverages that are dairy-based and some beverages that you would never think of associating with a single-serve coffee machine.

How We Will Compare Them

One of the main problems that most people have when it comes to choosing a single-serve coffee machine for their home or office is the fact that there are so many different components to look at and understand. Some coffee machines have incredibly advanced components and touch screens, while others are much more basic and minimal.

The two different models that we are going to be discussing today would definitely come under the latter category.

If you already know what sort of components and features you are looking for, then you should be able to tell straight away whether or not the Keurig K40 or the Keurig K45 could be the right option for you. If you don’t know what you’re looking for just yet, then some of the details that you will read in this article should help you to decide.

One thing that we can say for definite is that both the K40 and the K45 work perfectly. Keurig single-serve appliances are known for the absolute quality of the components that are present in them. In both of these models, all of the components that are present are absolutely necessary as they all affect the way in which these products work.

In this article, we are going to be taking a look at some of the basic components that are present on the K40 and the K45. One thing that you have to remember is that Keurig are known for their practicality so there are no fancy features on either of these products.

Similarities Between the Keurig K40 and the Keurig K45

Simple Control System

  • One of the first things that you need to be aware of is the fact that both of these products come with a very simple control system. An LED indicator will make you aware of when more water needs to be added, when the single-serve appliance needs to be descaled, when it is heating up, and that it is receiving power.
  • There are buttons that you can use to choose your brew size and power, but you cannot adjust anything like the strength or the temperature of your brew. The strength of your brew will be determined by the size of cup that you decide to use with both of these appliances.

Compatibility

  • Whenever you are thinking about purchasing a single-serve coffee machine for your home or office, you need to be fully aware of what you are buying and what the model you are buying is compatible with. The K40 and the K45 can both be used with Keurig 2.0 Licensed K-Cups and a reusable My K-Cup Pod.
  • The Licensed K-Cups are rather wonderful because they come in a lot of different options. You could use them to make a nice hot chocolate before you go to bed, or you could use one to make a nice cup of green tea in the morning … not to mention all of the different varieties of coffee that they come in. If you prefer choosing and drinking your own coffee, then you can use your own ground coffee with a reusable My K-Cup Pod.

Brew Sizes

  • Keurig recommend that you use cups that are no smaller than 6 ounces and no larger than 10 ounces with both these products. If you wanted to, then you probably could get away with using a slightly larger cup with both of these models because they do both include removable drip trays.
  • You would simply have to take out the drip tray and a larger cup or a travel mug would fit comfortably underneath.

Strength Control

  • One of the worst things about both of these models is the fact that neither of them offer you any real form of strength control. The only way that you can control the strength of your brew is to use a smaller cup if you need your brew to be stronger and a larger cup if you need it to be weaker.
  • If strength control is something that you are interested in, then you should take a look at some of the different models that can be found under the Keurig 2.0 product line. A lot of them include strength control and some of them will actually read the lids of Licensed Keurig 2.0 K-Cups so that they know exactly how much water to use so that you can get the most out of your brew.

Temperature Control

  • Another thing that the Keurig K40 and the Keurig K45 lack is any real form of temperature control. Temperature control doesn’t exist with either of these models and there isn’t really anything practical that you can do about it, other than using ice to make iced drinks.
  • If temperature control is something that you need, then you should also divert your attention to some of the Keurig 2.0 models.

Water Reservoir

  • Both the Keurig K40 and the Keurig K45 come with a water reservoir that has a maximum capacity limit of approximately 48 ounces. This is something that you should be aware of before you buy one because larger options are available if you decide that you would benefit more from owning a single-serve appliance with a larger water reservoir.
  • check
One of the quickest ways to tell what size water reservoir you should be looking for is to work out how many drinks you need to be making at any one given time.
  • check
If temperature control is something that you need, then you should also divert your attention to some of the Keurig 2.0 models.

What Differentiates the Keurig K40 and Keurig K45

Removable Water Filter

One of the first things that you should be aware of is the fact that the Keurig K40 does not come with a water filter, while the Keurig K45 does. Having a water filter is important, especially for people who live in hard water areas where things would quickly begin to build up without one.

We would advise that you purchase a water filter separately if you do decide that the Keurig K40 is the right product for you.

Final Verdict

There you have it, the main difference between the Keurig K40 and the Keurig K45 is the fact that one comes with a water filter and the other doesn’t. The fact that the Keurig K40 doesn’t come with a water filter isn’t even a major problem because you could always buy one separately. If you are looking to make a single purchase, then we would advise that you steer towards the Keurig K45.

Both of these products have the same size water reservoir and they can both be used with the same sized cups. Remember that the 6-10 ounce cups limit is only a guideline. You could easily fill a travel mug up with either one of these models by simply removing the removable drip tray, but you might need to wipe your countertop down afterwards.

If you think that you would benefit more from owning a high-tech product, then we would advise that you take a look at the Keurig K525. The Keurig K525 is part of the Keurig 2.0 Plus range and it offers the user a massive water reservoir that has a maximum capacity of approximately 80 ounces. It also features a 2.8” color display and temperature and strength controls.

Unlike most other single-serve appliances, the Keurig K525 can also be used at high altitudes because it has settings that enable you to do so. It is worth noting that you will have to pop tiny holes into your K-Cups if you are using one of these models at a high altitude, otherwise the pressure inside of them will simply build up and build up until they pop.

In our opinion, both the K40 and K45 are fantastic options for people who like to keep things minimal and basic. No, you won’t be able to set your own customizable clock with either of these products, nor will you be able to use them as night lights, but you will be able to press a single button and have a nice drink less than 60 seconds later.

Ask yourself, do you really need some of the fancy features that are present on some modern appliances? Or do you just need a nice cup of coffee in the morning?

If the latter question is the one that really speaks to you, then you should keep things minimal and avoid touch screens and the numerous different settings to choose from right after you get out of bed in the morning.

You should also remember to take a look at the catalogue of Licensed Keurig 2.0 K-Cups so that you can see all of the different drinks that you could have.

Keurig 2.0 vs. Keurig 1.0 Which One Is Best?

July 9, 2018 by Miguel Garriga Leave a Comment

Keurig1-vs-2

If you are at all familiar with modern kitchen appliances, you should be able to recognize the name Keurig Green Mountain. As a company that has been around for more than three decades, they have made a name for themselves when it comes to designing and manufacturing practical and reliable single-serve coffee machines (Keurig 2.0 vs 1.0).

So much so, in fact, that their coffee machines can be found in more than 20 million homes and offices across North America. If you are not familiar with Keurig Green Mountain, then you should be aware of the fact that most people do not buy Keurig single-serve brewers for their aesthetic appeal. Most of them are made out of relatively unappealing plastic.

In reality, people buy Keurig single-serve brewers because they are known to be reliable, durable and versatile. Some of their models even enable you to choose the exact temperature and strength of the brew that you want to drink, but most of those models can be found in the Keurig 2.0 product line, not the Keurig 1.0 product line. If you have a relatively cheap single-serve coffee machine, then those factors will be determined by the size of cup that you use.

It is also worth noting that while Keurig Green Mountain does specialize in manufacturing these appliances, they also offer a range of different beverages that work with most of their machines.

These include numerous different types of tea, cocoa, dairy-based beverages and coffee. For people who prefer to have a little bit more control over what they drink, there is also the option of using ground coffee with a reusable K-Cup.

The K-Cups themselves are rather unique too. Most of them come in the form of Keurig 2.0 Licensed K-Cups, but some models can also be used with unlicensed K-Cups. You can also use reusable K-Cups and your own ground coffee to make sure that you are going to enjoy your drink just as much as you should.

Comparing different single-serve brewing machines to each other can be a rather complicated thing to do. A lot of the companies that are currently designing and manufacturing them have already worked out which components a good single-serve brewing machine should have.

This can make it incredibly different for people to spot the difference between two different appliances from two different brands.

Today what we are actually going to be looking at is two different lines of Keurig Green Mountain products, as opposed to two completely different models.

We are going to be comparing their similarities, their differences and the way in which Keurig advanced when they brought out the Keurig 2.0 line of products, along with the Keurig 2.0 K-Pods and a wider variety of different beverages.

Similarities Between the Keurig 2.0 and the Keurig 1.0

K-Cup Coffee Lover's Variety Sampler, Keurig Single-Serve Coffee, 40 Count

Contains authentic Keurig K-Cup pods, engineered for guaranteed quality and compatibility with all Keurig K-Cup coffee makers

Compatibility

One of the main similarities between the Keurig 2.0 and the Keurig 1.0 lines of single-serve appliances is the fact that they are both compatible with the same beverage holders. They can both be used with unlicensed K-Cups, Keurig 2.0 Licensed K-Cups and reusable My K-Cup Pods.

That might not sound like a lot to some people, but it actually means that all of the different models that come under both of these product lines can offer the user an amazing amount of variety and versatility. K-Cups come in the form of different types of coffee, different kinds of tea, cocoa and a wide range of other beverages. You can also use reusable K-Cups with your own preferred type of ground coffee.

Water Reservoir Size

One of the main differences that you should be aware of is one that should tell you whether you should look for a Keurig 2.0 single-serve appliance or a Keurig 1.0 model. This key difference is the size of the water reservoir. If you have to brew drinks for a lot of different people at once, then the Keurig 2.0 line of products would probably be the best option for you.

The Keurig 2.0 appliances usually include a water reservoir that has a maximum capacity of approximately 70 ounces, whereas the Keurig 1.0 models have water reservoirs that have a maximum capacity of approximately 48 ounces.

It is worth noting that this makes the Keurig 2.0 line of products the best option for office environments.

One thing that is definitely worth remembering is the fact that Keurig still recommend that you use their Keurig 2.0 line of products and their Keurig 1.0 line of products with cups that are just 6-10 ounces in size.

You can use slightly larger cups or travel mugs if you feel like you would like to, but you should make sure that you use your removable drip tray if you are planning on doing that.

Carafe

Out of all of the differences that are present in the Keurig 2.0 and 1.0 models, our favorite is the fact that all of the Keurig 2.0 models include a 4-cup carafe. A carafe is simply a large coffee pot that can hold a lot of warm liquid at once, but it can also be used with other beverages, depending on what you like to drink.

You could use a 4-cup carafe to brew a large amount of your favorite tea to make iced tea in the summer, or you could use your carafe to brew a large amount of hot coffee all at once for the people in your office.

You can do whatever you want to with your carafe and using one is much easier than repeatedly changing the cups that are present under your single-serve appliance.

Controls

Keurig K55/K-Classic Coffee Maker, K-Cup Pod, Single Serve, Programmable, Black

Keurig K55 1.0 Model

Check Price on Amazon

Another key difference that you should be aware of as a user is the fact that most of the Keurig 1.0 models are incredibly simple and easy to use. They usually just have two buttons, one of which is used to control the power and the other to set the single-serve coffee machine to brew.

This simplistic design is a great option for some people, but other people prefer things that are more advanced.

If you prefer appliances that are more advanced, then the Keurig 2.0 models might be better options for you. They tend to feature touch screens that come in both black and white and color, depending on the exact model. Some of these easy to use touch screens can even be used to fully adjust the temperature and strength of your brew.

The Keurig 1.0 models include some of the best-selling single-serve coffee makers that have been easily accessible on the internet. This does not mean that they are advanced. What they do have is an LED indicator that lets you know when you should add water or lift the handle, but you have to make sure that you fill them before every use.

User Versatility

Are you the type of person who likes to have complete control over what you drink? If you are, then you really need to think about what sort of control you want to have over the temperature and strength of your coffee before you purchase your own single-serve appliance.

Keurig 1.0 models don’t usually give you a lot of control when it comes to either of these different factors. In fact, the way that you control the strength of your brew with a 1.0 model is with the size of cup that you decide to use.

A lot of the models in the Keurig 2.0 product line are a lot more versatile. They allow you to control the temperature of your brew and the strength of your brew without either of these factors being determined by the size of cup that you decide to use.

It is worth noting that while this is a good thing, you will struggle to control the strength of your brew if you are not using official K-Cups.

Advanced Settings

Are you familiar with the Keurig Green Mountain K-Cups? If you are not, then you should go through the online catalogue of them before you think about purchasing a Keurig single-serve brewer.

If you do, then you will know which different beverages you would like to try and which ones you would rather avoid. There are literally hundreds to choose from.

One of the only problems with having so many different options is the fact that some beverages require hotter water than others; some require less water than others; and some need to be brewed in a very specific way.

Luckily, most of the Keurig 2.0 models are actually capable of reading the lids of every single K-Cup that you use so that they can work out exactly how much water and heat to use with each drink that you make.

It is also worth noting that while this is a good thing, you cannot use any of the Keurig 2.0 models to make hot water. This means that you will not be able to make tea or hot chocolate using your own tea bags and hot chocolate powder, but you can use tea and hot chocolate K-Cups instead.
