Keurig K-Elite Coffee Maker, Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Brewer, With Iced Coffee Capability, Brushed Silver

Please click image for more info

The Keurig K-Elite is the latest installment in the Keurig K series, and it’s one of a kind. It’s a bit more on the expensive side, but you get what you paid for. The metallic, stylish design of the machine itself will bring a modern feel to your kitchen counter. This coffee maker comes equipped with a water filter and a 6-count K pod variety pack.

Its brewing sizes range from 4 ounces to 12 ounces, giving you complete control of how much coffee you make. That being said, you also have the power to change how strong your coffee is. The Keurig K-Elite lets you make your coffee exactly how you like it.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about refilling your water every time you want to use your coffee maker. The K-Elite contains a large 75-ounce reservoir that can brew 8+ cups of coffee before it needs to be refilled. Brew times are under a minute, so you'll be in and out in no time.

Other features include a drip tray that catches 99% of spills, making cleanup easier and more time-efficient. And, this coffee maker comes with an iced coffee setting. How cool is that? The buttons on top of the machine allow to easily switch between the hot and cold options.

On top of all of this, the Keurig K-Elite will alert you when it’s time to descale your machine. Routinely descaling your coffee maker prevents the build-up of calcium deposits, and ensures that your coffee tastes fresh every single time.

One thing to keep in mind about this model is the price. Like with anything, the quality of the coffee maker can change the price considerably. Seeing as this is the latest model, it makes sense that it’s a little more on the expensive side. However, with all the features it offers, the Keurig K-Elite is definitely worth it.

  • Easy to use
  • Alerts you when it’s time for some maintenance
  • Large reservoir

  • Unlike other designs, there’s no automatic turn-on/turn-off setting.

Best Keurig Models

source

With Keurig models designed for everything from a tiny kitchen or a dorm room, an office or commercial location, or a busy family kitchen, Keurig has a wide range of convenient, attractive coffee makers for nearly every situation.

But is a Keurig right for you?

And what's the best model for your needs? Today we're taking a closer look at these popular coffee machines to learn more about Keurig models and make the best purchase decisions.

Is Keurig Right for You?

keurig models

The number of ways to make coffee has never been greater. From ancient techniques for making stovetop coffee, to percolators and coffee presses invented in the last century, to drip coffee makers, specialty cappuccino machines and advanced coffee machines that grind and brew coffee with the touch of a button, we have never had a wider array of choices for every preference and every lifestyle.

Keurigs are among the most recent coffee-making inventions, and people love how quickly and easily they can make a cup of coffee when compared to other methods.

Questions to Consider Before Buying

source

When considering a Keurig, there are a number of factors that will weigh in your decision. Here are just a few:

How much space do you have in your kitchen?

Some advanced coffee machines designed for fast, single cup brewing also take up a lot of space in your kitchen. If space is an issue, you will need to consider the footprint of your coffee maker in your kitchen.

Are you short on time to make coffee?

French presses and pour-over coffee makers make excellent coffee, but the process can be time consuming. While many people love taking the time as part of their morning ritual, if you have a busy schedule, it may not be possible to spend 5 minutes making a cup of coffee.

Do you need a device that can be easily cleaned and reused? Aeropress, drip coffee makers, and French presses can all take quite a bit of time to clean for reuse. Many of us are all too familiar with coffee-making messes in the kitchen and in the office, so if you are in an environment with lots of people, where cleanliness is likely to be an issue, the ease and simplicity of a Keurig may help to keep things clean and save time when making coffee.

Are you making coffee in a space with limited access to water?

Making coffee always requires access to water, but some coffee makers require more ongoing water than others. If you won't have easy access to a kettle or stovetop and a sink for brewing water or cleanup, then that should factor into your decision.

Are you making coffee for a lot of people?

Drip coffee makers are able to produce large volumes of coffee at once, which might be helpful depending on the size of your family or your morning routine. If you need lots of coffee at once, a single-cup coffee maker may not be the right choice for you.

Do you want lots of different varieties of coffee?

Single-cup coffee makers allow everyone to choose the flavor they prefer, or try different things. But if you have a strong preference for a particular brand or brew, you may want to check that it comes in single-cup packaging.

Do you want to make tea, cocoa, and more in the same device?

Many coffee makers are not versatile enough to also make other hot drinks when you want them. Keurigs can make a variety of hot and cold beverages, and have won over many people who don't even regularly drink coffee at all.

Keurig Advantages

Keurig models

While all Keurig models are different and have slightly different features, the most common advantages of Keurig coffee machines are:

SPEED

It can take 5 or more minutes to make coffee with other machines, but a Keurig generally makes a cup of coffee in less than 90 seconds.

Single servings

If you only want to make one cup of coffee, or if you want every cup to be a different flavor or variety of coffee, Keurigs are very convenient.

Small footprint

Smaller models of Keurig take up very little space on a countertop.

Suitable for non-kitchen rooms

Because Keurigs don't require hot water, they don't need to be located near a stove or kettle, and cleanup is simple. That makes Keurigs easy to use in bedrooms, guest rooms, dorm rooms, and other rooms outside of the kitchen. Some people even keep a Keurig in the bathroom, so they have hot coffee along with the rest of their morning routines.

Disadvantages

Keurig models

Of course, Keurigs aren't for everyone, and they have some disadvantages as well:

Lack of options

Because each K-Cup contains a set amount of coffee, and the brew time and temperature are determined by the machine, the only variable that you can adjust to your coffee preferences is really the amount of water used in each cup. For those who prefer strong or hot coffee, a Keurig tends to limit these choices.

Freshness concerns

K-Cups often have “best before” dates a year or more in the future, and can be used even for several months past that date. But many coffee lovers find that coffee tastes best when the beans have just been ground, which is not only impossible in a traditional K-Cup, but it's impossible to tell exactly when the K-Cup was made.

Expensive

The machine itself can be expensive, but the long-term costs of K-Cups adds up. The cost of Keurig-compatible coffee works out to about $50/pound, more than double the cost of even very expensive gourmet coffees.

Unreliable

Many people find that their Keurig machines don't last for very long. It's not unusual for them to break down and stop working shortly after the manufacturer's 1-year warranty expires. Later in this article we'll discuss ways to maintain your Keurig and prolong its life, but it is something to be aware of.

Environmental impact

While the Keurig company is working hard to transition all K-Cups to recyclable #5 plastics by 2020, the small size of the cups will still present a challenge for existing recycling facilities. Even if the company meets their goal of producing completely recyclable K-Cups, we should all be trying to reduce overall plastic production and consumption for the sake of the planet.

As we can see, there are trade-offs for all that speed and convenience, but many people love their Keurigs and couldn't do without them. Further on in this guide, we'll look at some ways to offset the downsides of owning a Keurig, to help you make the most of it. But first, let's take a closer look at some of the different Keurig models.

Keurig Confusion: What's in a Name?

what is keurig

If you've shopped for Keurig coffee makers at all, you've probably run into a lot of confusion with model names. There are so many model numbers, and so many discontinued models, or models that have been renamed and reissued, that it can be difficult to tell which models you are comparing.

For example, the K50 is a rebrand and re-issue of the K40. The K55 is an update of the K50 with just a slightly different design and all the same features, but the K50 is now sold by Keurig as “the Classic.” Unfortunately, the K55 is also sometimes referred to as the “K-Classic” as well, despite both products being on the marketplace at the same time.

The K200 was discontinued and reissued as the K250. The K10 was discontinued and is now the K15, and so on. In side-by-side comparisons, the range of feature differences on these models can be very slight, while the machines themselves can look very different.

Or they can look almost exactly the same, as with the K-Classic and the Office Pro (K145), with almost the same features, but a fairly steep difference in price.

There are still some Keurigs on Amazon that are the older B-series, which have all been renamed to the K-series, but sometimes with minor differences.

For example, the B40 only brewed 8- and 10-ounce mugs of coffee, while the K40 brews 6-, 8-, and 10-ounce sizes.

The array of models and similarity of names and features can make Keurig comparison shopping something of a challenge, particularly on Amazon.

All of these models are available on Amazon, and often the older, discontinued models are higher in price than the current models, which can be confusing.

Keurig New Elite Single Cup Coffee Brewer − B40

View in Amazon

Keurig also uses the terms “Plus series” and “Keurig 2.0” to differentiate newer models from “Classic” models. Initially, Keurig “2.0” models were designed to only brew proprietary K-Cups produced by the Keurig company, but the consumer backlash was so strong that the 2.0 series are now compatible with third-party K-Cups, just like the Classic series.

So, from a consumer standpoint, when the Keurig 2.0 series was first launched, it made a huge difference in the kinds of coffee you could make in the machine. Now the 2.0 series still have the technology to only react to certain pods (and to Keurig Carafes), but the 2.0 designation is less meaningful because they will brew anything.

In order to resolve the discrepancies between model names and make sure that your Keurig really has the features you think it has, make sure you buy from a reputable dealer. This is particularly important if you are looking at the standard-sized K/B40, 45, 50, or 55, which are all extremely similar models, with slight, but significant, differences in features.

Differentiating Between Models

Here's a practical way to determine the essential features that differentiate among current Keurig models:

Reservoir size

The smallest Keurigs don't have a reservoir, and the big commercial models have reservoirs that hold up to 90 ounces. The size of the reservoir partially determines the overall size of the coffee maker, and determines how often you will need to add water to it before making coffee.

Brew size

Most Keurigs make 6-, 8-, or 10-ounce cups of coffee, with some going down to 4 ounces and others going up to 12. Newer models can also make Keurig mugs and carafes, so the coffee maker can produce everything from 4 to 30 ounces of coffee in a single brew session. If you want to make more coffee at once, look for newer, 2.0 series carafe-compatible models like the K250 and the K575.

Voltage and power

Keurigs designed for office use have UL Commercial certification, while home coffee makers are only UL listed for household use. The Keurig K150 is designed for commercial use and is NSF certified for foodservice use. So the external features on home and commercial models may look the same, but the inner workings aren't.

Once you have the brew size and reservoir size that works for you, you can look for other features that you are interested in, like programmability, adjustable temperature, or the “strong coffee” button.

The rest is mostly aesthetics, whether you want a smaller coffee maker, or a designer color, or simply prefer a different design.

With this information, you can sort out some of the model confusion and narrow in on the features that matter most to you. Here is a feature comparison of the top Keurig models available today.

Keurig K-Classic K50

The K50 is the classic standard-sized Keurig coffee maker, and it's a perennial favorite among Keurig lovers.

With the ability to brew 3 different sizes of cups of coffee and a generous 48-ounce reservoir, it's a great solution for fast and easy coffee on a busy morning.

The K50 brews all flavors of K-Cups, including tea and cocoa. It also brews iced beverages, including iced coffee and ice tea, in 6-, 8-, and 10-ounce sizes, in less than a minute.

Keurig K50 The All Purposed Coffee Maker, Black

View in Amazon

The removable drip tray allows you to brew coffee directly into your own travel mug or thermos as well as brew into a standard-sized coffee cup. The optional “auto off” feature allows the Keurig to turn itself off if it's left idle for 2 hours, saving energy, and it comes in black or rhubarb color. The K50 is the classic, all-purpose Keurig, and has won over thousands of converts to Keurig coffee.

Keurig K40 Elite

Keurig K40 Elite Brewing System

View in Amazon

The K40 is a pared-down version of the K50. Keurig no longer makes the K40 or K45 Elites, and they were rebranded to the K50 in 2015. The K40 Elite is slightly larger than the K50, but the functional features are virtually identical.

With the K40 Elite, you can brew three sizes of coffee, for 6, 8, or 10 ounces at a time. It brews all standard K-Cups, and makes iced beverages as well. The K40 is the fastest Keurig, brewing a cup of coffee in just 40 seconds.

It also brews at 195°F, which is the preferred coffee brewing temperature. Most Keurigs brew at 192°, which some specialists regard as a drawback.

The optional “auto off” feature allows the Keurig to turn itself off if it's left idle for 2 hours, saving energy.

Older K40 models only brewed two sizes of coffee, and older ones still only brewed a single 8-ounce brew size. The K40 Elite brews all three coffee sizes, so it's good to check which model you are getting if you choose a K40.

Keurig K575

The K575 is a significant advancement in standard-sized Keurigs, nearly doubling the size of the reservoir without increasing the overall footprint of the machine.

The K575 has several advantages over earlier models, with more power and versatility. With the K575, you can brew:

Keurig K575 Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker with 12oz Brew Size, Strength Control, and Hot Water on Demand, Programmable, Platinum

  • K-Cup pods in 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce sizes

  • check
    K-Carafe Pods in 22-, 26-, and 30-ounce sizes

The K575 touchscreen is also fully programmable, so you can set and store your favorite brew settings. Programmable features include:

  • Strength control
  • Temperature control
  • Set brew times to turn on or off automatically
  • check
    Energy saver mode
  • check
    Save your favorite brew settings

    Digital clock
  • check
Night light setting with customizable colors
  • check
Maintenance alerts to tell you when to descale the coffee maker or replace the filter

The spacious reservoir on the K575 is the largest on a consumer-level Keurig, at 80 ounces, and means you can brew more coffee between refills, and the large range of brew sizes mean you can make enough coffee for yourself or for a busy family.

It also has some additional settings and features that aren't in the K50 classic:

  • Maintenance reminder
  • High altitude setting
  • Quiet brew technology to minimize noise

The K-Elite is programmable, so you can set it to turn itself on in the morning, saving you a few minutes of warming up the Keurig. The generous 75 ounce water reservoir on the K-Elite improves time between refills, while the wider range of coffee brew sizes and temperature settings help you get the perfect cup of coffee in the morning.

Keurig K- Classic K55

Keurig K55/K-Classic Coffee Maker, K-Cup Pod, Single Serve, Programmable, Black

View in Amazon

The Keurig K55 is actually just a minor update to the K50, and is very similar in nearly every respect. Keurig refers to both models as “The K-Classic.”

The K55 weighs slightly more with very similar overall dimensions, and the features are the same.

Keurig says that the K55 has design updates to improve its durability over the K50, but the two models are so nearly alike that it's difficult to tell if any consumers have noticed an improvement.

With the K55, you can brew all standard K-Cups, including coffee, tea, cocoa, and other hot beverages. The K55 also brews iced beverages, and all can be made in less than a minute. It brews 6-, 8-, and 10-ounce sizes of coffee, with a 48 ounce reservoir.

The optional “auto off” programmable feature allows the Keurig to turn itself off if it's left idle for 2 hours, saving energy when it's not in use. This Keurig comes in black and rhubarb colors when sold by Keurig, but on Amazon you can also get it in white or blue.

Compact Size Keurig Models

Compact Size Keurig Models

Keurigs have a great advantage over other coffee makers when space is an issue. When you want to have fresh, hot coffee in a dorm room, bed room, or guest room, or if you need a coffee maker that will fit easily in a small home or RV, Keurig has several compact coffee makers that can easily meet your needs without taking up extra space. Here's an overview of the features in the more compact Keurig models.

Keurig K-Compact

The K-Compact is designed to offer the same features as a standard-sized kitchen Keurig with a slimmer footprint to preserve counterspace.

It has all the same capabilities as a Classic K50 or K55, but with a smaller reservoir to conserve space. It brews 6, 8, and 10 ounces of coffee, with a 36-ounce reservoir that only needs refilling every 3 cups less.

The tall design accommodates travel mugs up to 7 inches high with the drip tray removed, making it a great size for commuters. The K-Compact does not have internal water filtering capability, unlike many other Keurigs, so, depending on your water, it may need more frequent descaling, or you may want to use filtered water when filling the reservoir.

The K-Compact is a good compromise between all the standard, Keurig Classic features and capabilities, streamlined to take up less space on your countertop.

Keurig K250

Keurig K250 Single Serve, K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker with Strength Control, Black

View in Amazon

The K250 is a much slimmer Keurig, for a smaller footprint with powerful features.

The K250 has the ability to brew a range of coffee sizes with a small size and a range of fun colors that will match any décor. The K250 can brew coffee for a crowd, capable of brewing:
  • K-Cup pods in 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce sizes
  • Vue Pods in 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-ounce sizes
  • K-Mug Pods in 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-ounce sizes
  • check
    K-Carafe Pods in 22-, 26-, and 30-ounce sizes

It also features a touchscreen with many programmable and customizable features. With the K250, you can:

  • Select from English, French, or Spanish.
  • Choose a stronger brew
  • Select specialty setting for hot cocoa, chai, or mochas for the best taste
  • check
    Enable high altitude settings
  • check
    Enable water filter maintenance reminders

The small size, range of attractive and bright colors, and ability to produce a lot of coffee in a short time make the K250 a popular choice.

Keurig 2.0 K200

Keurig K200 Plus Series Touch Screen Revolutionary Keurig 2.0 Brewing Technology K-Cup K-Mug K-Carafe Pod Brewer Strength Control Setting Removable Water Reservoir (Black)

View in Amazon

The K200 is a slightly older model that was redesigned and relaunched as the K250. Like the K250, it brews everything from pods to carafes, and comes in a range of bright colors. However, this popular model is incompatible with 3rd party manufactured K-Cups.

The requirement to use only Keurig-branded K-Cups generated enough of a negative reaction to cause Keurig to stop making this particular model and re-release it as the 3rd-party compatible K250. Like the K250, the K200 is capable of brewing:

  • K-Cup pods in 4-, 6-, 8, 10-, and 12-ounce sizes
  • Vue Pods in 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-ounce sizes
  • K-Mug Pods in 12-, 14-, 16-, and 18-ounce sizes
  • check
    K-Carafe Pods in 22-, 26-, and 30-ounce sizes

It also has touchscreen controls, multi-language capability, the “strong brew” button, high altitude and water filter settings, and a slim design. However, the K250 is the recommended choice, because of the ability to use 3rd-party K-Cups and expand the range of beverages you can make with your Keurig.

Keurig K15 Mini

The K-Compact is designed to offer the same features as a standard-sized kitchen Keurig with a slimmer footprint to preserve counterspace.

It has all the same capabilities as a Classic K50 or K55, but with a smaller reservoir to conserve space. It brews 6, 8, and 10 ounces of coffee, with a 36-ounce reservoir that only needs refilling every 3 cups less.

Commercial Sized Keurig Models

Commercial Sized Keurig Models

A Keurig is a great solution to manage office drama around the coffee machine. Instead of constant disputes about who is supposed to make the coffee, or what flavor everyone likes, or who burned the coffee, or how strong it should be, a Keurig lets everyone make the cup of coffee they prefer and get back to work. Keurigs designed for commercial use are UL Commercial listed, unlike their household coffee makers.

Unfortunately, Keurig's refillable My K-Cup reusable K-Cups will not work in any of their commercial line of products.

Keurig Office Pro (K145 or B145)

Keurig K145 OfficePRO Brewing System with Bonus K-Cup Portion Trial Pack

View in Amazon

To go back to the naming confusion, there are two “Office Pro” Keurig coffee makers. This one, the K145 or B145, is almost identical to the Keurig Elite, with the only appreciable difference being the UL listing designed for commercial use, which also explains why it is more expensive than the Keurig Elite.

The better UL listing might make this a more durable option than the Elite, but it is in all other respects exactly like a Keurig designed for a home kitchen.

The Office Pro has the standard Keurig features:

  • Brews 6-, 8-, and 10-ounce cups of coffee
  • Brews in less than a minute
  • Removable drip tray for travel mugs
  • check
    48-ounce reservoir
  • check
Auto off setting allows the machine to turn itself off after 2 hours of idle time

This machine is not compatible with the refillable My K-Cup, which is a severe drawback. In a small office, with the same people drinking coffee every day, the My K-Cup is a great option to save money and protect the environment.

Since this model is so close to the features and capabilities of the K-Classic and K-Elite, but at a higher price, it might be a better choice to use a Keurig coffee maker designed for the home, but with the ability to use My K-Cups instead of disposable ones.

K155 Office Pro Premiere

Keurig K155 Office Pro Single Cup Commercial K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker, Silver

View in Amazon

The K155 is the Office Pro Premiere model, and it's truly designed for commercial use. With a massive 90-ounce reservoir, this coffee maker can keep a small office going for hours before refilling. This Keurig is loaded with features, including:

  • A full color LCD touchscreen that can be operated in English, French, or Spanish
  • Brews 6-, 8-, 10-, and 12-ounce cups of coffee
  • Programmable to automatically turn on and off at pre-determined times
  • check
Customizable brew temperature to brew or produce hot water from 188°-198°F
  • check
Quiet Brew technology keeps distractions to a minimum

It's more powerful, durable, and robust than Keurigs designed for residential use, without taking up much more space on a countertop. Many home users love their Keurigs so much that they get the K155 for their kitchens instead of a household model, and find it more robust and durable than the consumer Keurigs.

K150 Commercial Coffee Maker

Keurig K155 Office Pro Single Cup Commercial K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker, Silver

View in Amazon

The K150 is a truly commercial coffee maker. It is National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certified for use in foodservice, and has a 90-ounce reservoir, but is also capable of being plumbed directly to a water line so the reservoir never needs to be manually filled.

It has customizable brew temperatures, can operate in English, Spanish, or French, and can brew 5 coffee sizes. For the home coffee drinker, many committed Keurig fans have gone all the way to buying these models, and enjoy them for being more durable than residential Keurig models.

However, the K150 is only supposed to be sold commercially through authorized distributor: if a private person buys one on Amazon, Keurig will not provide support for the machine.

The K55

The updated interpretation of the K50 is another of the most popular Keurig models, for the same reasons.

As we can see from the feedback, what people want most in a Keurig is speed, simplicity, and reliability. It's easy to see why: a malfunctioning coffee machine adds stress and annoyance at the times that you are least prepared for it. Mornings in a family kitchen, an office break room, or even a morning commute, are difficult and stressful enough without having to go without coffee or deal with a malfunctioning machine.

Most people prefer their mornings as easy and simple as possible, so they can get on with their day. So the Keurigs that are the most durable, predictable, and have been on the market the longest tend to garner the highest reviews.

Our Keurig Recommendations

Customer feedback is important when weighing which Keurig is right for you, but those rankings may miss the latest and best Keurig features, or not account for specific needs and situations. To that end, we have reviewed all of the current Keurig models to make our recommendations based on the requirements and features that may be most important to you. Here are our top Keurig recommendations:

Best Keurig Model for Tea

The K-Elite: If you are using the Keurig exclusively for tea

Keurig K-Elite K Single Serve K-Cup Pod Maker, with Strong Temperature Control, Iced Coffee Capability, 12oz Brew Size, Programmable, Brushed Silver

View in Amazon

Why? The K-Elite has temperature controls, and different teas are best at different temperatures. White and green teas should be brewed at a lower temperature than fruit and herbal teas. The K-Elite will also produce simple hot water for tea in bags, instead of tea in K-Cups.

The K575: If you are brewing tea and coffee on the same Keurig

Keurig K575 Single Serve K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker with 12oz Brew Size, Strength Control, and Hot Water on Demand, Programmable, Platinum

View in Amazon

Why? The K575 has adjustable temperature controls, but also has a big water reservoir, and it is best to run a water-only cycle on a Keurig before and after using it for tea if you intend to then use it for coffee.

Tea and coffee particles can remain inside the Keurig needles, and impart tea flavor in coffee, or coffee flavor in tea. The large reservoir in the K575 allows for these rinsing cycles between beverages without needing to constantly refill the reservoir. The K575 will also produce simple hot water with the push of a button, for tea in teabags instead of tea in K-Cups

K250: Best Keurig for hot chocolate or specialty beverages

Keurig K250 Single Serve, K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker with Strength Control, Black

Why? The K250 has a special setting for hot cocoa, cider, chai, mochas, and similar beverages, to help them brew and taste their best.

The K-Elite: Best Keurig for iced coffee

Keurig K-Elite K Single Serve K-Cup Pod Maker, with Strong Temperature Control, Iced Coffee Capability, 12oz Brew Size, Programmable, Brushed Silver

View in Amazon

Why? While all Keurigs offer the ability to brew over ice for iced coffee and iced teas, the K-Elite has a dedicated setting for iced coffee, allowing you to brew cold beverages without diluting the strength of your coffee.

The K-Compact: Best Keurig for commuters:

Keurig K-Compact Single Serve Coffee Brewer Maker in Black with the Slimmest Removable Reservoir features Auto Off and Simple Button Controls

View in Amazon

Why? The K-Compact has all the features of the K-Classic, but has a generous 7 inches of clearance with the drip tray removed. While you can always get a travel mug to go with your Keurig, this is one of the Keurigs designed to go with your travel mug instead.

Keurig Accessories

Whichever model you choose, you can't make the most out of your Keurig without some essential accessories.

When buying a Keurig, there are a number of accessories that are worth getting at the same time, in order to make maintaining the machine easier, or just get more use out of it. Some Keurig accessories are necessary, and some aren't worth it. Here's a rundown of Keurig accessories.

Keurig Accessories: The Essentials

Carafe

Keurig 2.0 Thermal Carafe, 32oz Double-Walled, Vacuum-Insulated, Stainless Steel Carafe, Holds and Dispenses Up to 4 Cups of Hot Coffee. For Use With Keurig 2.0 K-Cup Pod Coffee Makers

View in Amazon

If your Keurig model is carafe-compatible and allows you to brew 22-30 ounces of coffee, you will need to purchase a Keurig carafe to go with it. The Keurig carafes are proprietary, and you can't brew the larger quantities of coffee without it.

If your carafe-compatible Keurig coffee maker came with a carafe, it's likely that it is the double-walled plastic carafe. However, it's worth it to upgrade to the Keurig-compatible thermal carafe instead, because the double wall insulation keeps your coffee hotter for longer.

The insulation will also keep cold-brewed Keurig beverages cold for longer, making a thermal carafe a good choice all year long.

Water filters

12-Pack KEURIG Compatible Water Filters by K&J - Universal Fit (NOT CUISINART) Keurig Compatible Filters - Replacement Charcoal Water Filters for Keurig 2.0 (and older) Coffee Machines

View in Amazon

Water filters are very important for the life of your Keurig, particularly if you live in an area with hard water. Mineral scale builds up inside your Keurig and impairs the functioning of the machine, and is a necessary part of Keurig maintenance.

And water filters will also help your coffee taste better by removing minerals and impurities. If you have very soft water, or already use filtered water when making coffee, then the filter may not be as important, but it's still a good idea.

Some Keurig models have an indicator when it's time to replace the filter. If not, the filter should be replaced every two months or sixty reservoir fillings. Charcoal filters need to be soaked and rinsed before they are placed into your Keurig, in order to protect the flavor of your coffee, so follow the instructions on the package.

Descaling solution

Descaler (2 Uses Per Bottle) - Made in the USA - Universal Descaling Solution for Keurig, Nespresso, Delonghi and All Single Use Coffee and Espresso Machines

View in Amazon

Even with soft, filtered water, mineral scale will build up in your machine, and it will need to be descaled. Descaling should be done when the Keurig indicates that it needs cleaning, or when it begins to lose performance, or when you notice that your coffee doesn't taste as good. Generally speaking, it's best to descale every 3-4 months.

Keurig (and third party manufacturers) sell a Keurig descaling solution. However, a solution of half vinegar and half water works just as well, for a fraction of the price. While descaling is necessary, it's not necessary to purchase a special descaling solution product.

K-Cup rinse pods

Urnex K-Cup Coffee Maker Cleaner - 5 Pods - Coffee Cleaner Use With Keurig and K Cup Machines

View in Amazon

You can purchase K-Cups filled with a cleaning and rinsing agent for your Keurig. These are not the same thing as descaling the machine, and are also necessary for cleaning your Keurig coffee maker.

These K-Cups will clean the coffee pod holder and needles, removing old brewing residue in a way that simply using a vinegar solution will not. Running rinsing cycles in a Keurig won't clean oils and product build up inside the tiny needles, so these pods are helpful for both cleaning a Keurig and for restoring the optimal flavor for your brews.

Keurig makes rinse pods, and they are also made by several third-party manufacturers. They all seem to work equally well, so the brand of rinse pod doesn't seem to make a big difference in end results.

Reusable K-Cup coffee filter

Keurig 2.0 My K-Cup Reusable Ground Coffee Filter, Compatible with All 2.0 Keurig K-Cup Pod Coffee Makers

View in Amazon

There are a number of reusable K-Cup replacements, but the best one is the Universal My K-Cup from Keurig themselves, since it is fully compatible with all of their residential coffee makers, including classic and newer models.

The My K-Cup directly from Keurig fits better in current Keurig machines than the ones made by third parties, and it is more likely to be compatible with future Keurig models as well. My K-Cup can be used to brew all sizes of K-Cup coffee, except carafes. My K-Cup solves several of the core problems of a Keurig:

Environmental

My K-Cups are reusable and designed to last for a long time. Using them reduces the waste and environmental damage caused by using single-serve K-Cups, while still enjoying the convenience of a Keurig.

Financial

The incremental cost of K-Cups comes out to coffee that costs ~$50/pound, which is incredibly expensive; even very high-end, gourmet coffees don't cost that much. With My K-Cup, you can buy whatever coffee you prefer, and use it with your Keurig, saving money with every cup.

Taste and quality

Coffee experts all agree that coffee should be brewed very fresh, just after it is ground. For those who appreciate the highest quality coffees, brewed at the height of freshness, My K-Cup allows you to choose and use on the freshest coffee, even grinding it yourself that moment, if you prefer.

You don't have to wonder how long your coffee has been sitting in a warehouse or on a store shelf before it reached your home. And My K-Cup allows you to also choose any kind of coffee, even your favorite small local roast, for use in your Keurig, and customize the strength to suit yourself.

In short, My K-Cup is a fantastic way to save money and protect the environment while having more control over the strength, freshness, and content of your Keurig coffee. There's just no reason not to get one.

Keurig Accessories: The Bells and Whistles

Coffee pod storage

There are lots of options for storing your K-Cups in a way that keeps them conveniently located and easy to access. One of the most popular is this model from Amazon Basics:  It's a great way to keep your K-Cups right where you need them, without adding clutter to your countertops. The drawers are not only convenient and sturdy, but they are a great way to sort K-Cups, so that different flavors or different people can have what they like best.

Pod scoop

No, you don't need a coffee pod scoop, but this one is really convenient for refilling a My K-Cup. It's the perfect size and shape to refill a K-Cup with just the right amount of coffee, so you don't need to guess, and the built-in funnel shape makes pouring into a K-Cup easy and mess free. It's a natural companion for a refillable K-Cup, and a useful and inexpensive Keurig accessory.

Setting Up Your Keurig

Whatever Keurig model you choose, there are a few things you will want to do to set it up to operate properly. Here are some tips for the initial setup of your Keurig.

Unboxing

Remove your Keurig from the packaging and remove the shipping disc from the pod attachment. Save the box, the manual, and anything necessary to pack and ship your Keurig. The manual has great information for using and maintaining your Keurig, so it's worth reading. And you should at least keep the box until the warranty expires, because Keurigs do have a reputation for being unreliable.

Assembly

Wash the water reservoir gently in warm soapy water, and wipe down the whole machine inside and out with a damp cloth while inserting the water filter, priming a charcoal filter (if applicable), finishing assembly, and placing the machine where you want it.

Run a Rinsing Cycle

Fill the water reservoir with clean water, place a coffee cup under the spout, and run a brew cycle on your new Keurig without a K-Cup, just to rinse it out. Run the largest brew cycle you can, provided it isn't larger than the cup that will catch the water.

Your Keurig should now be ready for use!

Maintaining and Troubleshooting Your Keurig

Some Keurig models have an indicator light that shows when the unit needs a new filter or periodic maintenance. But even without an indicator in the coffee maker, you should plan on performing routine maintenance in order to preserve the life of your Keurig and to keep your coffee tasting delicious.

How to Perform Periodic Maintenance on Your Keurig

While you should gently wash your Keurig every week, cleaning the drip tray, reservoir, and pod assembly, you will also need to periodically do a deeper cleaning to descale the workings of the machine You should always be using charcoal water filters to keep excess minerals from building up inside your Keurig.

Because charcoal filters need to be replaced every 60 days, it's a good time to perform your other Keurig maintenance as well, just to make a habit of it. Here's how to do periodic cleaning and maintenance most efficiently.

  • Open a new water filter
  • Rinse it under cool running water for a moment, until it is completely wet
  • Place it in a bowl of water to soak
  • check
Empty out the water reservoir, and refill it with a solution that is half water, and half white vinegar
  • check
Place a large mug on the drip tray (and make sure your pod holder is empty)
  • check
Empty and refill the reservoir with plain water, and empty the large mug and replace it on the drip tray
  • check
Place a K-Cup rinse capsule in the pod holder
  • check
Brew your largest brew cycle with the rinse solution
  • check
Remove and wash the reservoir with a mild detergent, and empty the large mug
  • check
Remove and wash the drip tray
  • check
Gently wipe down all the surfaces of the Keurig (inside and outside) with a damp cloth
  • check
Massage the charcoal filter in the bowl of water so that any loose charcoal is released into the water
  • check
Place the charcoal filter in the filter housing in your Keurig
  • check
Refill the reservoir with plain water, and place the large mug on the drip tray again
  • check
Make sure the pod holder is empty, and run a final cycle on your maximum brew setting.

Troubleshooting Your Keurig

The most common problem that people experience with their Keurig is that, over time, the volume of coffee produced decreases, or that the flavor of their coffee isn't as good. In nearly every instance of troubleshooting a Keurig, the first step is a thorough cleaning and descaling as described above.

If that doesn't work, Keurig suggests using a straightened paper clip to clean the needles in the pod assembly. Coffee grounds and debris frequently get trapped and build up inside the needles, and rinsing doesn't always work to clear them out, so poking a paperclip through them often helps dislodge anything trapped in there. Then perform another rinse cycle.

If that doesn't work, many Keurig owners find that “spanking” their Keurig somehow helps to restore function. It may seem counterintuitive, but Keurig lovers all over the internet have found that a spanking works to fix Keurig problems that aren't corrected by cleaning, descaling, and a paperclip. To “spank” your Keurig:

  • Remove the reservoir and drip tray
  • Unplug the machine
  • Hold it upside down over a sink
  • check
Hit the bottom of the unit soundly 2-5 times with the heel of your hand
  • check
Set it up again and see if it worked

It is theorized that spanking helps to clear stubborn debris that may be trapped inside, or remove air bubbles from the lines, or just show it who's boss, but hundreds of internet commenters agree that spanking a Keurig can resolve a variety of issues.

What is the Best K-Cup Coffee?

Hopefully you've found the best Keurig model for your needs, and have your machine set up and functioning, but now it's time to address the next most important question: K-Cup coffee. What's the best?

Of course, “best” is a subjective measure, and everyone has their own preferences, but there are some good ways to evaluate our options.

When you are first starting out with Keurig, it's best to get one or more variety packs of coffees, so that you can taste and try different things and discover what you like best. There are dozens of different K-Cup variety packs available, and here is how best to use them while getting to know your Keurig:

  • Try different brands and roasts of coffee to see what you prefer. Try to keep an open mind, even if you have strong opinions about coffee, and be willing to try new things
  • Have a coffee taste test, with several pods of the same brand, to try different settings on your new Keurig. Using the same flavor, style, and brand of coffee while you adjust different Keurig settings allows you to better compare different results and see what you like best, or find out first-hand what different settings do to your coffee
  • This kind of experimentation will quickly make you a Keurig expert, and allow you to zero in on the K-Cups, brands, and flavors you prefer, as well as figuring out which brew sizes, temperatures, and features you like best on your Keurig

Tips for the Best Brewing with Your Keurig

Brewing the Best-Tasting Beverages with Your Keurig

Always use filtered or bottled water if possible in your Keurig. It prevents minerals from building up inside the coffee maker, reducing the frequency of descaling, and makes your drinks taste as good as they can.

Brewing the best cocoa with your Keurig

For non-coffee beverages like cocoa or cider, the powders can settle in the bottom of the K-Cups and not brew properly. Always shake the K-Cup before inserting it into your Keurig, and make sure you hear the powder shake inside the cup.

Brewing different kinds of beverages with your Keurig

If you are using your Keurig to alternate tea or cider with coffee drinks, run a rinsing brew cycle on your Keurig with no pod in between beverages. The flavors are likely to carry over from one beverage to the next, which isn't noticeable when brewing different kinds of coffees, but is noticeable with other beverages.

Brewing at higher altitudes

If you are using a tightly sealed K-Cup with internal pressure (reusable My K-Cups and some eco-friendly cups are not made in this way), particularly if you are at a higher altitude, or brewing non-coffee drinks on your Keurig, it is best to pierce the K-cup before closing the pod holder. To do this, press the K-Cup firmly into place until the bottom needle pierces the cup.

Then close the holder and brew normally. Piercing the cup beforehand relieves pressure inside the K-Cup before closing the machine up, which prevents the internal pressure from “puffing” the cup contents upward, inside the top needle.

Instead, pressure is released downward, where the lower needle is protected by the filter inside the K-Cup. This helps to prevent clogs inside the needles, and prevents carryover contamination between different beverages brewed in the Keurig.

Brewing hotter coffee on your Keurig

Many people complain that even at the hottest setting, Keurigs don't brew hot enough to make the best coffee. While only some Keurig models allow you to adjust the brew temperature, and most never allow you to brew at the optimal 195°-205° that coffee experts recommend, you can get any Keurig to brew a few degrees hotter.

Simply brew a hot rinse cycle (without a pod), forcing the machine to heat up and brew hot water just before you brew your coffee. Place your mug to catch the water from this warmup/rinse cycle, discard the water, and then use that cup for your coffee as well. Making the cup itself a few degrees warmer keeps more heat in the coffee instead of transferring the heat to the cup.

Brewing hot water first, and using that water to pre-heat your mug, will make your coffee brew a few degrees hotter than it would if the machine had been idle for a while, and give you hotter coffee to drink.

Overcoming the Disadvantages of a Keurig

Back at the top of this guide, we discussed several of the disadvantages of owning a Keurig. However, as we have explored more Keurig models, accessories, and options, it's clear that there are easy ways to overcome these disadvantages.

There are a variety of easy, effective solutions to compensate for a Keurig's shortcomings and really enjoy the convenience of these popular coffee makers. Let's readdress these issues one by one.

Lack of Brewing Options (strength)

Some people who want a big cup of strong coffee don't like the fact that in larger brew sizes, a Keurig simply adds more water to a pre-determined amount of coffee.

Solutions

Many coffee addicts simply double the brew, since it is so fast and easy to do. Brew 2 K-Cup pods at the 6 ounce setting into the same cup to get a very strong 12 ounces of coffee

Choose a more robust coffee. Some brands make very strong coffee specifically for K-Cups, which makes for stronger cups of coffee.

Choose a different Keurig model. The K-Elite, K575, and K250 all have a “strong coffee” setting

Lack of Brewing Options (temperature)

Some people want coffee brewed at a hotter temperature than the Keurig default.

Solutions

Brew a hot water cycle before you brew coffee, to raise the operating temperature of your Keurig ahead of time

Choose a different model: The K-Elite, K575, and K250 all have adjustable temperature settings

Coffee Freshness Concerns

Some people don't like that K-Cup pods may not have the very freshest coffee inside them.

Solutions

Use a My K-Cup refillable K-Cup and fill it with your own, freshly ground coffee, so that it's always as fresh as possible.

Expensive

The cost of coffee per K-Cup pod is more expensive than coffee purchased by the pound.

Solutions

Use a My K-Cup refillable K-Cup and fill it with your own coffee, so you can purchase coffee by the pound at a price you prefer, but still use it in your Keurig for speed and convenience.

Unreliable

The internet is full of complaints that Keurigs frequently break down or don't last very long.

Solutions

Buy your Keurig from a reputable seller who will honor the warranty

Perform regular maintenance on your Keurig, keeping it clean inside and out

Complain to Keurig. Keurig has excellent customer support, which is fast and responsive. Provided you purchased through a recognized channel, they are eager to work with you to resolve complaints and concerns about your coffee maker.

Environmental Impact

Over the years, K-Cups have taken a toll on the environment, and it's important to reduce the use of disposable plastics in order to take care of our oceans.

Solutions

Use a My K-Cup refillable universal filter and fill it with your own coffee, to eliminate disposable K-Cups from your morning routine

Choose K-Cups from third-party manufacturers who make eco-friendly K-Cup pods. Many K-Cup options are produced by companies with strong environmental and social values, and supporting those companies is a better choice

Reuse and repurpose your K-Cups. The internet is full of fun and creative ways to reuse K-Cups, from storing small quantities of sauces, dressings, and condiments; to using them for kids and holiday craft and projects; to using them to store craft, kitchen, or office supplies. Getting creative with used K-Cups keeps them out of a landfill and may even save money at the same time

Get K-Cup caps. K-Cup caps are another way to reuse K-Cups, by refilling them with your own coffee, and then snapping a new cap in place.

As you can see, the newer Keurig models and My K-Cup accessory are specifically intended to offset many of these drawbacks, as Keurig evolves as a company and strives to win over new consumers. Keurig wants to offer fast, delicious, convenient coffee without harming the environment, and they are continually evolving their product line and company practices in order to achieve those goals.

The wide range of Keurig models, features, sizes, and colors means that there is a Keurig on the market for nearly everyone. Following these tips will help you choose the Keurig that's perfect for you, and then make the most of your machine, for the best long-term function, most flavorful coffee, and easiest way of life every day. Enjoy your kitchen, your workplace, and your mornings more with your new Keurig.
